What is Tooth Whitening?
Tooth whitening is a procedure by which the shade/colour of your teeth is lightened with the aim to cosmetically improve their appearance. It may also be used to treat some dental diseases, for instance fluorosis; teeth darkened due to trauma; tetracycline staining; etc.
Yellower or darker teeth are gradually changed to a more brighter shade improving the overall appearance of your smile.
How long do results last?
Results can last indefinitely with some simple maintenance. We recommend seeing our hygienist twice a year to ensure your teeth are clean and to top-up occasionally to prevent colour change.
Will it make my teeth sensitive?
Sensitivity is often little to none with some simple at-home steps. Your dentist will discuss these with you at your consultation.
For even the most sensitive patients we have exceptional toothpastes and de-sensitising gels that can be used to ensure the treatment is incredibly confortable.

Why do teeth change colour?
Does it damage your teeth?
Teeth whitening does not damage your teeth, in fact it is one of the safest procedures in cosmetic dentistry.
We use various gels of which your dentist will determine which is most suited to you.
How white will my teeth get?
Teeth will usually get 3-4 shades lighter on the Vita colour scale.
We also offer our patients Enlighten® Whitening.

Do you offer Teeth Whitening Strips?
While teeth whitening strips are heavily marketed as convenient and affordable solutions for a brighter smile, the truth is they often fall short of expectations, therefore we DO NOT offer them to our patients at Great Hampton Dental. Here’s why:
Unpredictable Results: Whitening strips do not offer consistent or predictable outcomes. Since they are designed as a one-size-fits-all product, they often fail to make uniform contact with all surfaces of the teeth—especially those with uneven alignment—leading to inconsistent whitening or patchy results.
Quick Fix Mentality: These products are typically marketed as fast, at-home fixes. However, true whitening takes time and expertise to do safely and effectively. Strips may give the illusion of minor change initially, but the results are usually superficial and short-lived.
Uneven Whitening: One of the most common complaints is a blotchy or patchy appearance after using strips. This happens because the strips often do not adhere well to the contours of your teeth, missing areas near the gumline or between teeth.
Weaker Ingredients: Over-the-counter strips contain lower concentrations of whitening agents compared to professional treatments. Without prescription-strength ingredients, they lack the power to significantly whiten deeper stains embedded in the enamel or dentin.
No Professional Oversight: Without guidance from a dental professional, users may misuse the strips, overuse them, or fail to recognize when they’re not appropriate (e.g., for people with sensitivity, existing dental work, or enamel issues), increasing the risk of irritation or ineffective results.
In short, while whitening strips might seem like a simple solution, they rarely deliver the kind of results patients are hoping for. For safe, noticeable, and long-lasting whitening, professional treatments remain the gold standard, consequently, only these are offered at Great Hampton Dental
